DEBRIS MONITORING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
The Oil Debris Monitoring System (ODMS) contains the subsystems that follow:
  • Oil Debris Monitoring (ODM) separator
  • Oil Debris Monitoring (ODM) sensor
  • Oil Debris Monitoring (ODM) unit.
** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
2. System Description
The function of the ODM system is to detect metallic particles contamination of the oil.

It is made of the ODM separator, the ODM sensor and the ODM unit.

3. Component Description
A. ODM Separator
The ODM separator functions are:
  • To separate ferrous particles from the oil and to direct them to the ODM sensor
  • To pressurize the oil tank through the Tank Pressurizing Valve (TPV)
  • To do the de-aeration of the oil of the lubrication system.

The ODM Separator is mounted on the oil tank (Ref. AMM D/O 79-11-00-00), located on the right-hand side of the fan frame at the 4 o'clock aft looking forward position and is connected to the oil scavenge line and the vent line. Gasket seals are mounted between the ODM separator and the oil lines to prevent oil leakage.

An O-ring is installed between the ODM separator and the oil tank to prevent oil leakage. The ODM Separator is made of:
  • A body with flanges
  • A Tank Pressurizing Valve (TPV) to make sure that there is a constant air pressure delta between oil tank and Accessory Gearbox (AGB)
  • A self-closing valve to prevent leakage when the ODMS sensor is not installed
  • A debris ring to direct ferromagnetic debris to the ODMS sensor tip.

Air and oil coming from the scavenge line of the lubrication unit are separated within the ODM separator. The air is guided towards the AGB through the vent line and the oil goes to the oil tank through the oil outlet.

To optimize oil system operation at high altitude, the TPV creates a small pressure drop that maintains a 10 +-2 psi or -+2 psi (0.6895 +-0.1379 bar or -+0.1379 bar) pressure delta between the oil tank and the AGB internal air pressure.

The TPV is made specially to prevent blockage in the closed position.

The ferromagnetic debris contained in the oil are centrifuged inside the ODM separator and directed by the debris ring to the ODM sensor.

The self-closing valve prevents oil leakage when the ODM sensor is not activated. The self-closing valve blocked in the closed position is not possible because it will prevent the installation of the ODM sensor.
B. ODM Sensor
The ODM sensor is made of:
  • A stainless steel body with a mounting flange
  • An integrated cable equipped with a connector
  • A magnetic sensing element.

The magnetic sensing element captures ferrous particles for detection and retains them for future inspection. When ferrous particles are captured, it generates an output pulse proportional to the particles mass. The pulse is send to the ODM unit through the output cable.
