2. System Description
A. The No. 3 Bearing
It consists of a ball bearing and a separate roller bearing. The function of the No. 3 bearing is to support radial loads through the No. 3 roller bearings and support axial, radial and circumferential loads through the No. 3 ball bearings.

B. The IGB
It consists of a horizontal bevel gear connected to the High Pressure Compressor (HPC) front shaft and a pinion bevel gear connected to the radial drive shaft, IGB housing, flanged roller bearing and the flanged ball bearing for support of the pinion bevel gear and lubrication nozzles.

3. Operation
In the engine running mode, the IGB transmits torque from the HPC front shaft through the horizontal bevel gear through the pinion bevel gear to the radial drive shaft. In the engine starting mode, the pneumatic air starter transmits torque to the IGB through the radial drive shaft. This torque is then transmitted to the pinion bevel gear, to the horizontal bevel gear, to the HPC front shaft causing the HPC rotor and High Pressure Turbine (HPT) rotor to rotate during the engine start.
