VERTICAL STABILIZER - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
The vertical stabilizer is attached to the rear fuselage. It holds the rudder. Three servo control units operate the rudder. The High Frequency (HF) antenna and the Very high frequency Omnibearing Range (VOR) antenna are attached to the vertical stabilizer. You can remove the vertical stabilizer as one unit.

3. Description
A. General
The vertical stabilizer has a spar box, leading edge, trailing edge, tip and rudder. Hoisting points are installed on each side of the spar box. You can remove the leading edge, the trailing edge, the tip and the rudder independently.
B. The Spar Box
The primary structural component of the vertical stabilizer is the spar box. It is made of laminations of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). Three pairs of primary attach fittings attach the spar box to the fuselage. Three transverse-load fittings transmit the transverse loads of the vertical stabilizer. They are laminated to the front, center and rear spar. Two hoisting points are installed on each side of the spar box.
C. Fittings
Rudder hinge arms and actuator fittings are attached to the rear spar of the spar box and hold the rudder. A strut between the rear spar of the spar box and rudder bearing No. 6 holds the vertical load of the rudder. Supports for the HF-antenna are installed to the front spar. The VOR-antenna is attached to a support frame on the upper end rib.
D. Leading Edge
The leading edge has three sections. They are made of laminations of Glassfiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) on a honeycomb core.
E. Trailing Edge
The trailing edge has four access panels on each side and three support frames. They cover the rudder hydraulics, servo controls, rods and hinge fittings. The access panels are made of laminations of CFRP on a honeycomb core. The support frames are made of CFRP.
F. Tip
The vertical stabilizer tip is made of laminations of GFRP on a honeycomb core. It is installed to the top of the spar box and to the leading-edge end rib.
