TRIMMABLE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER TRAILING EDGE - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. Description
B. THS Trailing-edge Components.
- On each side of the THS the trailing edge has:
- 10 ribs
- 4 panel assemblies on the upper surface
- 4 panel assemblies on the lower surface
- 4 access panels on the lower surface
C. Rib Attachment.
- The ribs are attached to the rear spar and the upper and lower shell of the spar box. Hi-Lok fasteners attach the ribs to these components. The ribs are made of laminations of Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Each rib has anchor nuts for the installation of the panel assemblies and the access panels.
D. Panel Assemblies.
- The panel assemblies are installed to the trailing edge ribs and to the rear edge of the upper and lower shell. Countersunk screws attach the panel assemblies to these components. The panels are made of CFRP on a honeycomb core.
E. Access Panels.
- The access panels are installed to the ribs and the rear edge of the lower shell. Countersunk screws attach the panels to these components. The panels have piano hinges to make access easier. The panels are made of CFRP on a honeycomb core.
F. Lightening Strike Protection.
- The TE servoactuator access panels and panel assemblies are made from a Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) internal facing, a honeycomb core, and an aluminum external facing. The aluminum facing is bonded and riveted to the internal facing of the panel. Bonding straps complete the installation and form a Faraday screen around the servo-actuator.
G. Trailing-edge Sealing.
- There are sealing strips installed along the rear edge of the panel assemblies and the access panels. They keep dirt out of the trailing edge.
