OIL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General
The APU oil system lubricates and cools the power section, load compressor, gearbox and AC-Generator. This system is made up of:
  • an integral wet-sump lubrication system with an APU mounted oil cooler,
  • an oil level, high oil temperature and low oil-pressure monitoring system.
The Electronic Control Box (ECB) 59KD monitors these parameters.

2. System Description
A. Storage and Distribution
The oil storage and distribution system supplies filtered, temperature and pressure regulated oil to:
  • the APU,
  • the APU generator.
The system has:
  • an oil reservoir (gearbox sump) with an magnetic chip detector,
  • a lube module,
  • two oil filters,
  • two differential-pressure switches,
  • an oil cooler assembly,
  • a de-oil solenoid,
  • an oil-sump temperature sensor.
  • an oil heater,
  • a low oil level switch,
  • a low oil pressure switch.
The gearbox sump is a wet sump which is also the integral oil reservoir. The generator and the turbine sumps are scavenged sumps.
B. Oil Indicating
The oil indicating system shows you if the oil quantity in the accessory drive gearbox is sufficient or if an oil servicing is necessary.
The ECB 59KD monitors the oil quantity through the low oil level switch
in the static condition (when the APU does not operate). The set minimum agrees with the ADD mark on the oil sight glass on the gravity oil fill-port.
When the ECB 59KD receives a low-oil quantity signal from the low oil level switch, it transmits the signal to:

  • the APU page on the lower ECAM display unit,
  • the APU SERVICE DATA page on the MCDU.
C. Low Oil Pressure and High Oil Temperature Warning
The low oil pressure and high oil-temperature warning-system together with the ECB 59KD monitor the APU oil pressure and the oil temperature. The system protects the APU against low oil pressure and high oil temperature.
When the ECB 59KD receives the low oil pressure or a high oil-temperature signal, it starts the APU automatic shutdown-sequence (Ref. AMM D/O 49-61-00-00).
D. Oil Heating
For APU with oil heater, the oil heater is installed on the APU gearbox. The APU oil heater increases the temperature of the oil in the APU gearbox oil reservoir if the oil temperature is too low.
