STATIC DISCHARGERS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
During the flight, the aircraft becomes charged with static electricity. If the discharge of static electricity is not controlled, it causes interferences in the communications and navigation systems.
Static dischargers are installed on the aircraft to decrease the interferences.

3. System Description
Each static discharger assembly has a retainer and a static discharger. The retainer is attached to the structure with rivets. The static discharger is attached to its retainer with one screw, to make it easy to replace.
The static discharger assemblies are installed at the tips of:
  • The horizontal stabilizer
  • The vertical stabilizer
  • The elevators
  • The rudder.
They are also installed on the trailing edges of:
  • The wing tip fence
  • The wing fixed structure
  • The ailerons
  • The elevators
  • The rudder
  • The flap track movable-fairings
  • The engine pylon rear-fairings.

Two types of retainers are installed:
  • A flat retainer at the trailing edges
  • An angular retainer at the tips.
Two types of static dischargers are installed:
  • One with a straight mounting, installed at the trailing edges
  • One with a 30-degree angle mounting, installed at the tips.
These two types are not interchangeable.

6. Operation/Control and Indicating
The static dischargers:
  • Decrease the voltage level necessary to start the corona discharge
  • Make very low radio-frequency field-strength in areas and thus cause a discharge in these areas.
  • Discharge the static electricity charge.
The effect is to decrease the interferences in the communications and navigation systems.
